NALOXONE

Naloxone is a life-saving medication that can stop or reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.

ANYONE can access this medication by obtaining a prescription from their family doctor or by using the standing order issued by Rachel Levine, M.D., PA Physician General.  The standing order is kept on file at many pharmacies or can be downloaded from the Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs website at http://www.ddap.pa.gov/overdose/Documents/Naloxone/Naloxone%20Standing%20Order%20for%20General%20Public.pdf.

Naloxone or otherwise known by its brand name, Narcan, can be administered two ways, by injection or intranasal (nasal spray).  Training to administer Naloxone is available at www.getnaloxonenow.org.

More information on Naloxone can be found at the Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Program’s website at http://www.ddap.pa.gov/overdose/Pages/Naloxone_FAQ.aspx#.Vvlfo9LD-mR.
